Normalized Burn Index (NBR) is a way of measuring the extent and severity of fire damage using the near-infrared and shortwave infrared bands of the spectrum. It is calculated by comparing the amount of near-infrared light (which vegetation reflects strongly) and shortwave infrared light (which vegetation and soil absorb) that is reflected by the land cover. NBR values range from -1 to +1, where lower values indicate more fire damage and higher values indicate less or no fire damage.

NBRI = (NIR - SWIR) / (NIR + SWIR)
